Communication: Minding Your Intentions
Minding your intentions:
Alignment of your intentions is important, especially when communicating to others. Intent is the action behind our motivations and purposes. Impact is the result of our actions or what we achieved. We cannot control the impact or how a person will respond, but we can make the effort to be intentional in our own communication. Here are some things to consider when shaping our communication intent:
1. Thinking about the end from the beginning. Is it necessary, is it kind, is it important?
2. Am I frustrated, angry, tired, or otherwise emotionally charged?
3. This is often an issue on social media- is your comment contributing to the current conversation? Does it need to be said?
4. Do you have the type of relationship with a person to say what you want to say? Have you been invited to speak into that person’s life? No? Please humble yourself and be quiet. Unnecessarily imposing your intentions on someone is definitely going to have a negative impact.
Minding our own business, monitoring our own intent, and understanding that all thoughts do not need to be said regardless of your intentions will increase peace in your lives. 💙
