A Fantastic Voyage Part V: Failure and Detours

As we continue our journey to pass on wisdom and discuss lessons learned, I wanted to touch on failure. Failure is an unpleasant part of our lives and the fear of failure can be debilitating. We are human beings and that means that we are not perfect and we will get some things wrong. I invite you to embrace failure as a part of the process of life and remember that failure is not final. There is an quote that encourages me when I am frustrated by my own failures, which have been numerous. The saying goes:

Failure is an opportunity to try again, but with more experience this time.

So, as I tell my students…..learn to fail forward, take every detour as a opportunity to adjust, and learn something new about yourself.

Speaking of detours, that is the second part of our discussion today. Welcome the detours of life because they can bring amazing outcomes and sobering, but needed revelations. This can be a tough pill to swallow- especially when the detours is through no fault of your own. This used to set me on fire! However, what I have learned to do when life detours me from my perfect plan is to embrace the change and see what lessons I may need to learn. Sometimes, there aren’t any of either- there is just acceptable of the circumstances. Life can be debilitating, frustrating, and unrelenting. As you journey through the unavoidable detours of life, I recommend that you take a moment to stop and smell the proverbial (or literal) flowers. In other words, enjoy the journey of life as you pursue your destination.
